Moose derives from Algonquian, a Native American language. It kept the same plural ending it had in its original language instead of adopting the normal S ending of most English plurals. WebThe singular of sheep already had that front vowel, and so the umlaut process left it unchanged. It couldn't make the singular retroactively different. As for why "moose" never took the normal -s plural, I have no idea. Thanks for the reply. I guessed it had something to do with the singular already being sheep.
